How to Winter-Prep Your Pipes in 4 Simple Steps

Cold weather can damage your plumbing—but with just a few precautions, you can stay worry-free all winter.

  1. Insulate exposed pipes—especially in unheated areas like garages, lofts, or exterior walls. Foam sleeves or pipe wrap are easy and effective.

  2. Let faucets drip to keep water moving in freezing temperatures—especially in pipes along outside walls.

  3. Protect outdoor taps—shut them off and drain them, and consider using low-cost “tap jackets” for added protection.

  4. Keep heat flowing—open cabinet doors under sinks and maintain a minimum indoor temperature to avoid cold spots.

Taking these steps now can prevent frozen pipes, costly repairs, and major headaches down the line.
